Photo Restoration

A few years ago an old and damaged photo like the one shown here, could be restored by a long involved process. In order to protect the integrity of the original the following procedure was generally used:

  1. Make an copy on negative film
  2. Make a new print from the negative
  3. Manually retouch the new print, a process which had severe limitations, and could take many hours.

With digital technology the process is as follows:

  1. Scan the old photo using a desktop scanner
  2. Import into a retouching programme
  3. Retouch digitally
  4. Output to film recorder, generate negative and make as many prints as you require
    or
  5. Print by high quality ink-jet printer using UV resistant inks

This whole process can be taken a step further and colour applied in the retouching stage, as shown in the image on the left.
